University Design Clinic Projects
SpudNik-1: Command & Control | SEP 2018 - APR 2019
PROJECT MANAGER
Client: Canadian Space Agency and Sentto Labs
UPEI FSDE Senior Design Clinic - Charlottetown, PE
Alongside my team of four other students, I was tasked with the design and proof-of-concept of the command and control system for SpudNik-1, a CubeSat funded by the Canadian Space Agency. The goal of the overall SpudNik-1 project is to reduce the volume of pesticides sprayed on PEI crops through the use of precision agriculture technology, creating a positive environmental and economic impact. I was elected by the members of the Command & Control team to act as project manager. Throughout this role, I was tasked with managing the design timeline and overall project logistics. These tasks included: bill of materials and human resources budgets; risk and requirements management; scheduling and progress tracking through use of Gantt charts; managing relationships and personal accountability within the team; and supporting others in their roles. For our team’s work on the project, we received the Excellence in Teamwork award from UPEI’s Engineering faculty at the 2019 UPEI Engineering Expo. I was also tasked with designing a website for the SpudNik-1 project for this expo through the Wix development platform: https://spudnik-1.wixsite.com/home

Province House Virtual Reality | SEP 2017 - APR 2018
AUDIO-VISUAL LEAD
Client: Parks Canada
UPEI FSDE Senior Design Clinic - Charlottetown, PE
Alongside my team of three other students, I was tasked with the design and final product delivery for a virtual reality tour of Charlottetown’s Province House National Historic Site. The purpose of this project was to offer visitors a chance to see the historic building while it was closed for renovations. I acted as the team’s Audio-Visual Lead. I performed audio and video recording and editing, as well as the design of graphics for use within the tour. Throughout this project, our team worked collaboratively through an international partnership with the University of Trinidad and Tobago. This was a highlight of the project, and both sides worked diligently to overcome communication and accessibility challenges to deliver the final product on time and to the satisfaction of the client. The project was featured in the Charlottetown Official Travel Guide, as well as on various local CBC segments. Province House VR won the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 UPEI Engineering Expo as voted on by the hundreds of visitors in attendance and was nominated for a Parks Canada CEO Award of Excellence in the Excellence in Leadership and Innovation category.

Retort Rack | SEP 2015 - APR 2016
COMMUNICATIONS LEAD
Client: Bio Food Tech
UPEI FSDE Junior Design Clinic - Charlottetown, PE
Our team was tasked with the design and proof of concept for an adjustable retort rack to be used during the pasteurization of packaged lobster. I performed analysis, CAD modeling, and physical prototype manufacturing. I acted as the Communications Lead and point of contact between the team and all external personnel including the client. During this engagement, the champion of the project on the client’s side was replaced by an individual with a different set of priorities. This challenge resulted in a change in scope of the project and required flexibility and accommodation on the part of the team to complete the project within the designated timeline and to the satisfaction of the client. Although challenging, this was an excellent opportunity to experience a real-life situation where requirements were significantly altered mid-project.
